Frequently Asked Questions About Iron Doors

The cost of iron doors varies based on multiple factors, including design complexity, size, material quality, hardware selections, glass type, and installation requirements. Custom-designed doors typically cost more than standard models due to the craftsmanship and unique detailing involved. Additionally, wrought iron doors can be finished with custom coatings and glass options that affect the price.

Wrought iron is a durable and malleable type of iron known for its low carbon content and ability to be shaped without breaking. Unlike cast iron, which is brittle and made by pouring molten iron into molds, wrought iron is hand-forged, allowing for intricate detailing and superior strength.

Wrought iron is commonly used in decorative architectural elements, including doors, gates, railings, and furniture. Its fibrous texture and resistance to corrosion make it an ideal material for custom iron doors.

Wrought iron is produced by heating raw iron and repeatedly hammering it to remove impurities, creating a strong yet malleable material. The process involves:

  1. Heating: Raw iron is heated in a forge until it becomes malleable.

  2. Shaping: Blacksmiths use tools to hammer, twist, and shape the iron into intricate designs.

  3. Cooling & Finishing: Once the desired shape is achieved, the iron is cooled and coated with protective finishes.

Due to the craftsmanship required, wrought iron doors are highly valued for their elegance and longevity.

Wrought iron contains very little carbon, typically less than 0.08%, along with fibrous slag inclusions that give it a unique, wood-like grain when etched. This composition allows wrought iron to be:

  • Highly malleable and easy to shape.

  • Resistant to corrosion compared to other types of iron.

  • Strong enough for use in doors, gates, railings, and other architectural elements.

Its ability to be reheated and reshaped multiple times without compromising its strength makes it ideal for custom ironwork.

While both iron and steel are commonly used in construction and manufacturing, they have distinct differences:

  • Iron: A natural element found in the Earth’s crust, iron is used in various forms, including wrought iron and cast iron.

  • Steel: An alloy made from iron and carbon, steel is stronger, denser, and more resistant to impact and stress.

Wrought iron is often preferred for decorative applications due to its flexibility and timeless appeal, whereas steel is commonly used for industrial and structural purposes.

Wrought iron doors are highly durable and resistant to weather elements, but they do require periodic maintenance to preserve their appearance and structural integrity. Factors such as humidity, exposure to salt air (especially in coastal regions), and general wear and tear can contribute to oxidation or rust over time.

To ensure longevity, we recommend:

  • Cleaning your door regularly with a soft cloth and mild soap (see our cleaning guide below).

  • Applying protective coatings or wax to prevent rust.

  • Inspecting hinges, locks, and seals to maintain functionality.

Cleaning your wrought iron door properly helps maintain its beauty and durability. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Dust Removal: Use a soft, dry cloth or duster to remove dirt and debris.

  2. Mild Cleaning Solution: Mix warm water with a mild dish soap and use a non-abrasive sponge or microfiber cloth to wipe down the surface.

  3. Dry Thoroughly: After cleaning, dry the door completely with a lint-free cloth to prevent water spots or potential rusting.

  4. Rust Prevention: In high-humidity environments, apply a protective wax or metal sealant to keep moisture out.

Cast iron is composed of approximately 2-4% carbon, along with silicon, manganese, and other trace elements. It is produced by melting iron and pouring it into molds to create specific shapes. Cast iron is widely used in cookware, plumbing, and some architectural applications due to its affordability and durability. However, it is more brittle than wrought iron, making it less suitable for custom door designs.
